Quay ‘Skater Of The Month’ November - Will Golding

Updated: 1 day ago

I’ve known Will for a long time now, I can’t remember when we met, but it has been a good 12-15 years or so I think that we have been friends.

We have been all over the place on trips together, including galavanting around California in the US on Skate missions, as well as being on the same brands together at times too.

He is an incredible Skater from Nottingham, now a full time Hornsea resident here in East Yorkshire, and pops through to Hull often to Skate, as you will see in the photos below.

Will was turned pro for legendary UK brand Unabomber a few years ago, and has had several video parts which solidify his pro status, some of the best parts were filmed for Get Lesta.

I can safely say that Will is one of the most genuine people I have met, he is such a great person and amazing Skateboarder, we got on instantly and still Skate together to this day.

I gave him a message to see if he’d like to be Quay’s skater of the month, simply because of who he is, how he portrays himself and the fact he is still holding it down in Hornsea, ripping the Skate park a new one when he gets the chance.

Now then Will hows it going?

Hey mate, yeah not too bad cheers!

You’ve been holding it down in Hornsea for a good few years now, hows it going there, you getting much in at the Skate park?

Hornsea is good thanks! It’s a great little town and the skate park is good. I haven’t been in a while but I need to go soon before the bad weather sets in!

You’ve taken up a few new roles of late, job changes becoming a fire fighter, also one of the biggest roles of life, in that of becoming a father, congrats. How is all this going?

Yeah life has been amazing recently.

I have been a retained firefighter in Hornsea for 6 years and I recently got a full time position at Hull central fire station a year and half ago. I love it, I couldn’t imagine doing anything else now.

I had a daughter last Christmas which was life changing. Being a dad is the best thing that’s ever happened to me, it’s hard at times but so rewarding. Looking forward to getting her on a Skateboard as soon as she’s ready.

Amazing congrats on becoming a father, super stoked for you mate! I know from being a longtime friend, you as a person will be the best Dad. Amazing to see this happen. Does she keep you busy?

Thanks dude! Yeah she keeps me super busy but it’s amazing seeing her grow and seeing her personality come through. She’s definitely got a cheeky side like her dad!

That is rad, you have always been someone that looks after others due to the person you are, am I correct in thinking you’re a lifeboat worker too?

I was on the lifeboat in Hornsea for 2 years before becoming a retained firefighter. It was so fun and I definitely gained a healthy respect for the water after some of the jobs we had.

I see you’ve been surfing alot, you been meeting up with our boy Woody for any sessions? Getting Dave (Yobbo) Yeomans out too?

Yeah I try and surf any opportunity I can, a flat spell can last months so when you see there’s waves on the way you do what you can to get in.

I haven’t had a session with Woody yet but I’m keen to get one in.

I see Dave pretty regularly in the sea and around town. He’s good at reading the swell charts so I always text Dave before going in the sea haha. Thanks Dave!

Any signs of a new Will Golding street part in the near future?

Haha no sign of a street part anytime soon mate! Maybe I’ll squeeze one more out in the future if I’m lucky but at the moment it’s a pipe dream.

But you’re only young still? Like what 31? Plenty of time, considering people like Daewon and Palmer are now 50, still killing it with new parts in the works!

Haha yeah I guess I am still young. I’m 32 so still plenty of time. I’m trying to look after my body the best I can so I can continue doing things I enjoy and I want to be able to skate and surf with my daughter when she’s older so that’s motivation to stay healthy.

As I said you’re still young, lets see it happen! Plus, Skateboarding has now evolved, the cut off used to be 25 years old… which is just ridiculous, I think some of our best skating only started around our mid 20’s?

Yeah I had the best time skating in my early to mid 20’s. I owe a lot to the filmers for getting me out to different places and spots. I’m a creature of habit so I’ll skate the place all the time if I’m not persuaded to go anywhere else.

I’m not sure about you, but after a couple of decades of looking after myself, going to the gym, running, doing other sports, I feel this has only helped me prolong my Skateboarding to a decent level into my 30’s and 40’s moving forward, what do you think? I know you hit the gym regularly.

I think looking after yourself physically is massively beneficial. I have to maintain a certain level of fitness for my job so I’m lucky to have a facility at work to use.

One thing I have noticed is my recovery time isn’t as quick as it used to be but stretching helps me a lot with that and trying to eat healthy.

What are your sponsors sayin? You were on Would and a couple of others at one point, Lakai, Super Eight? What is going on with all that.

Yeah I feel very fortunate to have had all the sponsors I’ve had. They’ve kept me rolling and gave me motivation to improve and keep skating.

As of now, I only get help from SuperEight but I’m so thankful to those guys, they couldn’t do enough for me and I’ve known Sam and Nick forever so it feels like family.

I know of Sam from when he took over DVS UK, but not met Nick, always heard decent things though!

Did Sam sort you with DVS? Damn I miss those days, DVS was the best hook up, rad that we were on it together at one point, and then Lakai. Stoked.

Yeah Sam helped me out for years with DVS and Matix for a while too. Nick was the first person to see potential in me as he put me on Adio when I was 14. I owe a lot to both those guys, I’m forever grateful.

Right mate we’ll call it there, thanks for taking some time to do this for our blog!

Thanks for asking me to do this Paul! I’ll pop into the shop when I’m passing next as I work just down the road from it!

All the best mate and hopefully see you soon.
